Wheeling, West Virginia is the perfect example of the dangers of globalism – and a case study in how an America First agenda can protect us from those dangers.
Once a manufacturing powerhouse, Wheeling’s mills and factories closed down as our country’s failed leaders opened up our economy to so-called trade partners that were all too happy to take unfair advantage of us.When manufacturing and steel-production began to dwindle, the working people of Wheeling looked to mining, quarrying, and gas extraction. The businesses with the highest paying jobs in the area, they were also a favorite and frequent target of Barack Obama, whose left-wing ideology was more important than making sure honest men and women could put food on their tables.
Thankfully, a different President is in the White House and he has a very different way of doing business. With support from Congressional Republicans, my father was able to transform our economy, and the results have been astounding.
“Six months ago, we unleashed an economic miracle by signing the biggest tax cuts and reforms,” President Trump said in June. “Six months of new jobs, bigger paychecks and keeping more of your hard earned money where it belongs, in your pocket or wherever else you want to spend it.”
Businesses across the country, including those in Wheeling, are more confident in our economic future than ever before. Local business owners who attended a recent roundtable in Wheeling exuded confidence and optimism about the future as they reflected on the huge benefits of the President’s tax cuts.
Wheeling-based Warwood Tool said it was so optimistic following the tax cuts that it’s developing an entirely new line of products.
Scott Trimmer, operations manager for Wellsburg-based Eagle Manufacturing, said that the company went from “having no optimism” in November 2017 – before the passage of the tax cuts – to hiring new employees and buying new equipment. That new equipment could itself “result in as many as 25 jobs being created,” said Trimmer.
Business optimism isn’t the only thing on the rise in Wheeling. The city has also seen a sharp, increase in tourism of 16 percent – higher than the 1.2 percent increase in tourism nationally. Governor Jim Justice credited my father directly for this stunning growth in Wheeling’s tourism industry.
The Trump administration is also making sure Wheeling gets the investments it needs to ensure it keeps growing well into the future. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act also creates “opportunity zones” designed to encourage long-term investment. Some of those funds are being made available to develop parts of South Wheeling.
That’s not all. Brooke and Hancock counties received $6.2 million in grant funding from the administration to help improve infrastructure and remove abandoned buildings and vacant lots.
But tax reform and America First mean even more than all of that – they mean more cash in your family’s bank account. Thanks to the Trump Tax Cuts, the average married couple with two children in Wheeling will save over $2,000 on their tax bill.
President Trump is also taking his fight for American workers beyond our borders, ensuring that they can compete fairly with their American-made products in international markets.
